Ellen Schattschneider is an Associate Professor of Anthropology and affiliated faculty in Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Brandeis University. She specializes in sociocultural anthropology with a focus on East Asia, particularly Japan, employing psychoanalytic and phenomenological approaches.

- B.A. in Philosophy, Psychology, and Anthropology from Sarah Lawrence College
- M.A. and Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Chicago
Her research explores ritual performance, gender, embodiment, spirit mediumship, sacred landscapes, and psychoanalytic theory. Her book Immortal Wishes (2003) examines healing practices and cultural dynamics around a Shinto shrine in northern Japan. She has conducted extensive fieldwork in the Tsugaru region since 1991.
