Christy Schuetze

Christy Schuetze is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Swarthmore University's Department of Sociology & Anthropology, with affiliations to the Lang Center, Black Studies, and Gender & Sexuality Center. Her research centers on rural women's religious participation in Mozambique, examining intersections between social healing, Pentecostalism, and spirit mediumship.

Her anthropological work spans medical anthropology, environmental justice, and post-colonial governance. Publications reveal recurring themes in African studies, religious movements, and socio-economic transformations.

Recent scholarship explores Pentecostal church leadership dynamics, moral economies of spirit relationships, and conservation-related narrative conflicts in Mozambique. Earlier works examine therapeutic language systems and grassroots justice mechanisms.
