Ellen M. Bernhard is an Assistant Professor of Communication at the School of Business and Digital Media, Department of Communication & Graphic Design. Her office is located in Jeffries Hall 204A, with office hours on Mondays 12:30-2:00 and Wednesdays 10:00-12:00. She holds a PhD in Culture, Communication, & Media Studies from Drexel University (Philadelphia, PA) and a B.A. in Media & Communication Studies and English from Ursinus College (Collegeville, PA).
Her research focuses on punk rock communities, media studies, and digital communication. Key works include her 2019 book Contemporary Punk Rock Communities: Scenes of Inclusion and Dedication (Lexington Books) and articles examining punk identity, music festivals, and media co-optation. She has reviewed influential books on punk subcultures, internet linguistics, and reading practices, and her work appears in journals like Punk & Post-Punk and Rock Music Studies.
Bernhard is an editorial board member for Punk & Post Punk and the Global Punk book series (Intellect) and currently serves as President of the Punk Scholars Network (US Affiliate). She teaches courses in public relations, digital media, communication theory, and brand strategy.
