Mike Dines is a Senior Lecturer in Music Cultures (Research) at Middlesex University, affiliated with the School of Arts. He serves as Programme Leader for the BA (Hon) Music and is actively engaged in teaching modules such as Critical Thinking in Music and Popular Music in the 21st Century.
His research centers on punk subcultures, spirituality in music—especially the Krishnacore movement—and punk pedagogy. He has co-edited major academic works including The Aesthetics of Our Anger, Punk Pedagogies, and The Oxford Handbook of Punk Rock. His scholarship explores intersections of music, resistance, religion, and education.
The recent articles highlight a consistent focus on punk spirituality, global punk scenes, and pedagogical innovation. Themes include Krishnacore, DIY ethics, subcultural identity, and the academic study of underground music. His work spans book chapters, journal articles, conference papers, and podcast contributions, reflecting a dynamic, interdisciplinary approach.
Mike Dines is a founding member of the Punk Scholars Network, an international forum for punk scholarship established in 2012. Through this network, he has organized conferences, edited publications, and mentored emerging researchers in punk studies.
He supervises doctoral researchers Marko Vojnić and Paul Pacifico.
