Ellen Gambles is a Lecturer in BSc (Hons) Physical Education with QTS and an Associate Researcher in the Helen McArdle Nursing and Care Research Institute at the University of Sunderland. She completed her PhD in Sport and Exercise Sciences in 2024, focusing on barriers to implementing Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) under the supervision of Dr. Steven Anderson, Dr. Sandra Leyland, and Professor Jonathan Ling. Her research spans health inequalities, weight stigma, and critical pedagogies in education and healthcare.
Education includes a PGCE in Lifelong Learning from the University of Huddersfield and Fellowships from the HEA and Institute of Swimming. She leads research collaborations with NHS bodies, universities, and local authorities, including studies on menopause experiences for people with learning disabilities and workplace health initiatives.
Research interests include obesity, EDI in healthcare/sport, and overcoming pedagogical barriers in physical education. She co-leads the Staff Enable Network, advancing disability practices at the university, and has presented at international conferences. Teaching roles include modules on equality, diversity, and practical PE pedagogy.
Awards include recognition as a HEA Fellow and her contributions to EDI advocacy. Current projects involve global studies on TGfU implementation and health equity, alongside collaborations with institutions like the University of Cambridge and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
