Ellen Cox is a Professor of Philosophy at Transylvania University, affiliated with the Department of Philosophy and cross-listed with Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies programs. She holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from DePaul University (2001), an M.A. (1997), and a B.A. in Philosophy and History from Miami University of Ohio (1993).
Her research focuses on post-structuralist critiques of body politics, with specialties in queer theory, feminist philosophies, and fat studies. She teaches controversial yet influential courses such as 'Queer Theory and Culture,' 'Philosophy and Disability,' and 'Unruly Bodies: Constructing and Deconstructing Sex.'
Cox has received notable awards including the Bingham Award for Teaching Excellence (2007) and multiple Kenan Fund grants. Her recent work addresses the sociopolitical construction of 'fat identity' through Foucault's framework, interrogating how societal norms pathologize bodies classified as obese.
She co-led a transformative study abroad program ('The Philosophical Gourmet') examining food's philosophical implications in Paris, blending academic rigor with cultural immersion. Cox mentors campus organizations like T-Unity (LGBTQ+ group) and Sophia (philosophy society), showcasing her commitment to intersectional academic engagement.
