Ella Berny is an English Lecturer and Teaching Associate at the School of English and Drama, Queen Mary University of London. She is also a PhD candidate collaborating with Amnesty International on research exploring abortion storytelling’s role in challenging restrictive abortion laws. Her work merges queer and feminist theory with autotheory to center marginalized voices.
Ella holds a BA in History from the University of York, an MA in History from University College London (UCL), and an MA in Creative Writing from Birkbeck College, University of London.
Her research interests prioritize queer feminist frameworks, reproductive rights advocacy, and interdisciplinary narrative methodologies. Key areas include:
- Autotheory as a tool for socio-legal critique
- Impacts of abortion criminalization on bodily autonomy
- Literary representation of marginalized reproductive experiences
Her publications include a 2021 collaborative study on abortion barriers in Medicine Access @ Point of Care, alongside creative works in t’ART and The Feminist Library zine, reflecting her dual focus on academic rigor and artistic expression.
Ella’s PhD project investigates how criminalization structures everyday life in Ireland, Northern Ireland, and England, analyzing legal transitions and their lingering societal effects. She emphasizes collaborative, participant-driven storytelling to bridge activism and academia.
