Rebecca Smyth is a Lecturer in Law at Birmingham City University (BCU), affiliated with the College of Business Law and Social Sciences. As an interdisciplinary feminist scholar, she specializes in intersectional feminist approaches to international human rights law, focusing on how historically oppressed groups engage with human rights mechanisms to advance recognition and justice.
Her research spans critical areas such as abortion access, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHRs), reproductive autonomy and justice, postcolonial/decolonial theory, and disability rights. She has conducted fieldwork in the Republic of Ireland and El Salvador, collaborating with transnational feminist organizations, human rights experts, and institutions like the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University and International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF). Current projects include a Europe-wide abortion law database with Safe Abortion for Everyone (S.A.F.E) and policy guidelines for human rights defenders with Amnesty International.
