Elke Weissmann serves as a Reader in Film and Television within the School of English & Creative Arts at Edge Hill University, where she actively teaches and researches television studies. She currently accepts PhD students and her work directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through media-focused climate action and community resilience initiatives.
Her research spans transnational television drama, public service broadcasting, and television's role in climate change communication. Key projects include British Academy-funded collaborations examining community-led television and sustainability, with recent work analyzing how television industries construct narratives of climate adaptation. She specializes in high-end drama, soap opera, and the cultural specificity of Welsh and German television.
Analysis of her 2024-2025 publications reveals a concentrated focus on German television evolution, climate communication through local media, and generational shifts in audience engagement. Her work bridges media industries, cultural studies, and environmental sustainability, emphasizing community participation and transnational storytelling patterns that address global crises.
Dr. Weissmann has supervised three postgraduate students and leads significant externally funded projects including RYATATT (Researching Young and Transnational Audiences of Turkish TV Drama), CLTLVaCA (Community-Led Television, Local Voice and Climate Action), and Transnational Television Drama in the Multiplatform Age – all demonstrating her commitment to real-world media impact.
She actively contributes to the Television Studies Research Group and SustainNET at Edge Hill University, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration between media scholars, environmental researchers, and community organizations to advance sustainable media practices.
