Elizabeth Whittaker is an Associate Professor in Practice of Architecture at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design (GSD), where she has taught since 2009 and led the Design Discovery Summer Program. She is also the founder and principal of MERGE architects, a Boston-based practice since 2003, specializing in contemporary craft, urban typology transformation, and social ecology. Her work bridges academic research and practice, emphasizing cross-disciplinary collaboration with fabricators and engineers. She serves on the U.S. Department of State’s Industry Advisory Group for Overseas Building Operations.

Research Interests: Elizabeth focuses on redefining urban boundaries through housing and material systems, integrating digital fabrication with handmade craft. She explores how material choices and cross-disciplinary processes can transform typologies and urban dynamics.

Labs/Teams: MERGE architects operates as a collaborative hub with fabricators, artists, and engineers. She co-founded the Young Architects Boston (YAB) design collaborative, fostering regional innovation.
