Elizabeth Vierling is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her research focuses on molecular chaperones, stress responses, and nitric oxide metabolism in plants. She holds a PhD from the University of Chicago and has conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Georgia.
Her lab investigates protein folding mechanisms, small heat shock proteins (sHSPs), and the HSP100 chaperone system. Recent work includes studies on mitochondrial function, nitric oxide regulation, and stress tolerance in plants like Arabidopsis and Synechocystis. Vierling leads an NSF-funded project exploring mitochondrial roles in plant productivity under climate change.
Key research themes include protein aggregation/dissagregation, translational regulation during stress, and enzymatic regulation of nitric oxide homeostasis. Her lab employs biochemical, genetic, and structural approaches, with notable contributions to understanding sHSP oligomer dynamics and stress-induced protein interactions.
Recent publications highlight mitochondrial-nucleoid interactions, NO signaling in reproduction, and heat tolerance mechanisms. The lab maintains active collaborations and has secured significant funding for interdisciplinary projects linking basic biology to agricultural resilience.
