Elizabeth Tibbetts is a Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on behavioral evolution, particularly the coevolution of communication systems and social behavior in Polistes paper wasps.
- Ph.D. in Neurobiology and Behavior from Cornell University (2003)
- Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Insect Science, University of Arizona (2003-2005)
Dr. Tibbetts investigates how social insects like paper wasps develop recognition systems, cognitive specialization, and adaptive behaviors. Her work spans evolutionary processes, organismal biology, and behavioral syndromes, with recent studies on pesticide impacts on wasp cognition and social lek dynamics.
Her laboratory creates innovative learning modules and educational tools for understanding insect behavior. Current research trends include analyzing visual/chemical signals, hormone-mediated aggression, and the ecological consequences of social behavior plasticity.
