Elizabeth S. Greene is a Professor in the Department of Classics & Archaeology at Brock University, within the Faculty of Humanities. Her academic roles include serving as President (2023-2026), First Vice President (2020-2023), and Vice President for Cultural Heritage (2017-2020) of the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA), and Corresponding Member of the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut (2024-present). She holds BA, MA, and PhD degrees from Princeton University.
Her research focuses on seaborne mobility across the Mediterranean, emphasizing material evidence for trade, fishing traditions, and displacement of peoples. Key projects include the SSHRC-funded 'Entangled mobilities across the Mediterranean,' investigating abandoned ships carrying displaced peoples, and the Marzamemi Maritime Heritage Project in Sicily, which includes the excavation of a 6th-century CE shipwreck. In Turkey, she studies Iron Age shipwrecks and harbors, exploring ancient maritime networks and economies.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on Early Greece (CLAS/VISA 3P24) and Classical/Hellenistic Greece (CLAS/VISA 3P25). Her work integrates ethical frameworks for archaeology, emphasizing inclusive, global perspectives. She has organized conferences on migration and heritage, and her publications address topics like Mediterranean connectivity and contemporary displacement.
Awards and recognitions include her AIA leadership roles and Deutsches Archäologisches Institut membership. She actively advocates for cultural heritage preservation and ethical practices in archaeology.
