Dr. Elizabeth Johnstone serves as a Pharmacology Lecturer in the School of Biomedical Sciences at The University of Western Australia, with a dual appointment continuing her research at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. She chairs the UWA Pharmacology and Toxicology Research Committee and serves on the Space and Accommodation Committee for the School of Biomedical Sciences.
Her educational background includes a PhD in Pharmacology from UWA (2016), a First Class Honours Degree in Pharmacology (2011), and a BSc in Biochemistry and Pharmacology (2009), all from The University of Western Australia.
Dr. Johnstone's research focuses on receptor signaling mechanisms, particularly G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), with expertise in bioluminescence resonance energy transfer (BRET) technologies for studying receptor heteromers. Her work explores how receptor complexes form and function, with implications for drug development targeting cardiovascular, endocrine, and neurological conditions. She develops innovative molecular assays to investigate receptor pharmacology at the molecular level.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong focus on GPCR heteromerization, receptor signaling mechanisms, and advanced molecular imaging techniques. Her work spans multiple physiological systems including cardiovascular regulation through angiotensin and bradykinin receptors, as well as orexin signaling in neurological contexts.
Dr. Johnstone actively contributes to professional organizations, serving as Secretary of the Innovation and Industry Special Interest Group for the Australasian Society of Clinical and Experimental Pharmacologists and Toxicologists, and holding multiple elected positions with the Endocrine Society of Australia and International Union of Basic and Clinical Pharmacology.
She teaches multiple pharmacology courses including Molecular Pharmacology (PHAR3310), Systems Pharmacology Methods (PHAR3320/3321), and contributes to Integrated Medical Systems (IMED3111) and Drug and Vaccine Design (MICR5817). Her research is supported by active grants including projects on metabolic diseases, breast cancer subtypes, and diabetes complications.
Dr. Johnstone collaborates extensively through the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research and maintains strong connections with international pharmacology research networks, contributing to the advancement of receptor pharmacology through both basic science and translational research approaches.
