Elizabeth Howie is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Health and Life Sciences, University of the West of Scotland. She is a qualified midwife (since 1992) with extensive clinical experience in Labour Ward and Practice Development roles at the Princess Royal Maternity Hospital in Glasgow. She holds a BSc in Health Studies (Midwifery), a Master of Midwifery, and a PhD focused on obstetric emergencies with student midwives. She currently leads the MSc Midwifery Programme (with registration).

Research Interests: Her work focuses on midwifery education, obstetric emergency simulation training, personal development planning (PDP), and ePortfolio use in healthcare education. She also explores perinatal mental health, trauma support post-obstetric emergencies, and innovative learning methods like apps and gaming. Recent collaborations include studies on bariatric surgery outcomes and maternal healthcare.

- 2022: Enhancing the Student Experience through 21st Century Virtual Simulation Technology Prize
Advising & Grants: Led research projects such as the SMMDP evaluation (funded by NHS Education Scotland) and contributed to studies on young pregnant women’s antenatal care. Currently supervises PhD students in midwifery-related fields.

- External Examiner for midwifery programmes at Bournemouth University (2018–2021), National University of Ireland Galway (2012–2015), and Kingston University London (2009–2013)
- Instructor for SMMDP national training programme (NHS Education for Scotland, 2007–2021)
