Elizabeth Harney is an Associate Professor in the Department of Arts, Culture and Media at the University of Toronto. Her scholarship bridges African art history, modernism, and decolonial theory, with a focus on the politics of exhibiting and cross-cultural dialogues. She has authored and co-edited seminal works on Senegalese avant-garde movements and Ethiopian diaspora art.

Research Interests: Harney explores comparative modernisms, contemporary cosmopolitanism, and postcolonial critiques of art institutions. Her work interrogates the intersections of indigeneity, colonialism, and global art practices.
Recent Publications: Her 2024 article on decolonial visions at Montreal's Expo 67 examines cross-cultural solidarities, while 2018 studies analyze modernist movements across Africa, India, and Melanesia. Themes include primitivism, materiality, and the reclamation of Indigenous aesthetics.
- Awards: Arnold Rubin Outstanding Publication Award (2007) for In Senghor's Shadow.
Editorial Roles: Exhibitions Reviews Editor at African Arts and Consulting Editor at NKA: Journal of Contemporary African Art. She previously curated contemporary art at the National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian (1999–2003).
