Elizabeth Hamilton is an Associate Professor of German and Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Oberlin College. Her research focuses on Twentieth-century West German literature and film, East German cinema, postwar narratives of 'Vergangenheitsbewältigung,' and Disability Studies. She holds a BA from Grove City College (1987), an MA from the University of Delaware (1991), and a PhD from Ohio State University (1998).

Her work bridges literary analysis with ethical and social questions, particularly through her translation and interpretation of Franz Fühmann’s What Kind of Island in What Kind of Sea (2021), which explores dignity and representation in East German institutions for people with cognitive disabilities.
