Elizabeth Finnis is a Professor and Director of the One Health Institute at the University of Guelph's Department of Sociology and Anthropology, within the College of Social & Applied Human Sciences. She holds a PhD from McMaster University (2006) and specializes in food sovereignty, political ecology of food systems, and small-scale farming. Her research spans Canada, India, and Paraguay, focusing on agricultural transitions, rural livelihoods, and environmental sustainability.
Her current projects include examining local food systems in Ontario's Parry Sound District and studying smallholder farmers in Paraguay under social and environmental change. Finnis has secured a SSHRC Insight Development Grant for her work on agricultural values and food sovereignty in northern Ontario.
She actively collaborates across disciplines, including veterinary medicine and public health through the One Health framework. Her pedagogical work emphasizes student-faculty collaboration, as seen in her 2023 publication on teaching anthropology. Finnis mentors graduate students in medical anthropology, food systems, and gender studies.
