Dr. Athena Birkenberg is a Researcher at the University of Hohenheim working in the Research Group for Social and Institutional Change in Agricultural Development (490c). She teaches multiple courses including Methods in Interdisciplinary Collaboration, Policy Processes in Agriculture and Natural Resource Management, and Governance of Sustainable Agri-Food Systems.
Her research focuses on sustainable agricultural development with particular emphasis on climate change mitigation in farming systems. Her work examines how digital technologies can transform agricultural practices, especially among smallholder farmers in developing contexts. She investigates governance structures of carbon projects and how farmers engage with new technological solutions from a capabilities perspective.
