Elizabeth Fair

Elizabeth Fair is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She serves as Co-Director of the UCSF Center for Tuberculosis and the UC TRAC Developmental Core, and directs the PhD in Global Health program at UCSF’s Institute for Global Health Sciences. Her research focuses on tuberculosis (TB), TB/HIV co-infection, global health implementation science, and strategies to improve TB control in low-resource settings. She actively advises the World Health Organization (WHO), American Thoracic Society (ATS), and Dutch Tuberculosis Group (KNCV) on TB policy and standards.

Her work spans multiple countries including Tanzania, Bangladesh, Madagascar, and Mozambique, addressing TB stigma reduction, contact investigation optimization, and innovative technologies for TB education. She co-authored the International Standards for Tuberculosis Care and chairs the WHO Steering Committee for TB case-finding policies. Dr. Fair’s research also examines One Health approaches to public health emergencies in Uganda and authorship equity in global health research.

Key collaborations include the TB RAMP initiative and the World TB Day Oversight Planning Committee. Her publications span epidemiological analyses, implementation strategies, and health systems strengthening. She has contributed to molecular epidemiology studies of TB strains in San Francisco and historical vaccine efficacy research on varicella and rotavirus vaccines.

Grants and leadership roles include directing multidisciplinary global health programs and overseeing developmental cores focused on translational research. Her work integrates clinical, public health, and policy dimensions to address global health challenges.
