Professor Elizabeth Crooke is a Professor of Heritage and Museum Studies at Ulster University. She leads the Engaging the Past research cluster in the Arts and Humanities Research Institute and serves as Course Director for the MA Cultural Heritage and Museum Studies and the MA Museum Practice and Management (distance learning). Her work focuses on museums, heritage, and community engagement, with notable publications including Museums and Community: Ideas, Issues and Challenges (Routledge 2007) and Politics Archaeology and the creation of a national museum of Ireland (Irish Academic Press 2000).
She is a co-investigator on the AHRC/HLF-funded Living Legacies 1914-18: From past conflict to shared future project and actively involved in heritage governance as Chairperson of the Northern Ireland Museums Council and Board member of the Irish Museums Association. Recent research explores community, memory, and material culture, including studies on artefacts as agents for social change and the role of 'active museums' in fostering community engagement.
Her scholarly contributions emphasize the transformative potential of heritage practices, particularly in conflict-affected regions. She has presented at international conferences and collaborates on projects addressing heritage’s role in shaping political and social futures.
