Elizabeth Claus

Elizabeth Claus, MD, PhD is a Professor of Biostatistics and Director of Medical Research at the Yale University School of Public Health. She also holds a secondary appointment as Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at Yale. Additionally, she serves as an Attending Neurosurgeon and Director of Stereotactic Radiosurgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

Dr. Claus received her PhD from Yale University in 1988 and her MD from Yale University School of Medicine in 1994. She completed her neurosurgery residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital and her fellowship in neurosurgical oncology at Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Her research focuses on cancer and genetic epidemiology with particular emphasis on developing risk models for breast and brain tumors, including meningioma, glioma, and acoustic neuroma. Dr. Claus is the Principal Investigator of several major research initiatives including the Meningioma Consortium, the Meningioma Genome-Wide Association Study, and the Yale Acoustic Neuroma Study. She also co-leads the GLIOGENE (Genes for Glioma) and International Glioma Case/Control (GICC) projects.

Dr. Claus launched the International Low-Grade Glioma (LGG) Registry in 2016 to investigate why some people develop LGG and to study the impact of diagnosis and treatment on quality of life. Recently, she received funding from the National Cancer Institute for the OPTIMUM project, which aims to establish a comprehensive genomic characterization of glioma tumors across time by enrolling 500 participants diagnosed with LGG who have had two or more surgeries.

Dr. Claus serves on the board of advisors for the Acoustic Neuroma Association and the Central Brain Tumor Registry of the United States. She is actively involved in NIH peer review and has been a member of the Glioma Research Consortium since 2008. Her recent publications demonstrate her leadership in neuro-oncology research, particularly in molecular epidemiology of brain tumors and quality of life outcomes.
