Dr. Elissa Cutter is an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies & Theology at Georgian Court University (GCU), located within the School of Arts, Sciences, and Education. She has been with GCU since 2019 and previously served as a Postdoctoral Faculty Fellow at Loyola Marymount University (2016–2019). Her research focuses on recovering women's theological voices in history, particularly within the Catholic tradition, with expertise in 17th-century French spirituality and Jansenism. She holds a Ph.D. in Historical Theology from Saint Louis University (2016), an M.A. in Theology from the Graduate Theological Union (2009), and a B.A. in French and Theology from Georgetown University (2003).
Dr. Cutter’s teaching philosophy is rooted in feminist and Jesuit pedagogical traditions, emphasizing experiential learning through service-learning projects and study abroad programs. She is a Certified Blackboard Specialist and has participated in workshops such as the Wabash Hybrid Teaching and Learning Workshop (2022) and Interfaith America’s Teaching Interfaith Understanding Seminar (2023). She co-edits the blog WIT: Women in Theology and leads courses including Christian Tradition, Theological Ethics, and Social Justice Ethics.
Her research explores how historical contexts, such as the contributions of Port-Royal nuns like Mother Angelique Arnauld, inform contemporary theological discourse. She advocates for interdisciplinary approaches that bridge historical analysis with modern social justice issues.
