Dr. Amir Hussain is a Professor of Theological Studies at Loyola Marymount University (LMU), specializing in Islamic studies and interfaith relations. He holds a Ph.D. and master’s degree from the University of Toronto’s Centre for the Study of Religion. His work emphasizes understanding religious traditions through a modern lens, focusing on global religious diversity and contemporary theological questions.
Education: Earned both his Master's and Ph.D. in Religion from the University of Toronto. Previously taught in the California State University system before joining LMU in 2005, drawn by its liberal arts culture and commitment to interfaith work rooted in the Catholic intellectual tradition.
Research Interests: Islamic studies, comparative theology, religion’s role in modern society, interfaith dialogue, and religion’s portrayal in film. Advocates for recognizing internal religious diversity and fostering cross-tradition understanding.
Awards & Recognition: Named LMU Professor of the Year in 2008 and 2009. Co-editor of major textbooks including World Religions: Western Traditions and World Religions: Eastern Traditions.
Advising & Engagement: Serves as Faculty Advisor for LMU’s Women’s Basketball team and Muslim Student Association. Led interfaith pilgrimages to Israel with Campus Ministry, fostering dialogue among Abrahamic faiths. Actively involved in Campus Ministry initiatives.
Labs/Teams: Collaborates with Campus Ministry on global interfaith projects, emphasizing experiential learning through cultural and religious exchanges.
