Elise Ferree is a Professorial Lecturer in the Department of Natural Sciences at Scripps and Pitzer Colleges, part of the Claremont Colleges consortium. She previously served as a Postdoctoral Associate at Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Her educational background includes a PhD in Biology from UC Santa Cruz (2007), MS from Wake Forest University (2001), and BS from The College of William and Mary (1999).
Research Focus
Dr. Ferree's lab investigates behavioral ecology using bird and spider model systems. Core research examines:
- Function of breeding/social behaviors in wild populations
- Winter social dynamics of migratory white-crowned sparrows
- Urban ecological sustainability
- Intersections of public health, nutrition, and women's health with ecology
Student Mentorship
She actively involves undergraduates in research, currently advising 4 students with 63+ past advisees. Students regularly present work at conferences including the West Coast Undergraduate Research Conference.
