Elise A. Friedland

Elise A. Friedland is Associate Professor of Classical and Ancient Near Eastern Studies and Art History at George Washington University's Columbian College of Arts & Sciences. As an expert in Greek and Roman art and archaeology, she researches marble sculpture in the Roman Near East and classical influences on American art and architecture.

Her publications include studies of Roman statuary from Israel and Jordan, investigations of religious iconography, and analyses of classical reception in Washington, DC's built environment. Friedland is currently preparing Classical Washington: Greece & Rome in the Art and Architecture of DC under an NEH Public Scholar Fellowship.

Awarded the Archaeological Institute of America's Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award and GW's Bender Teaching Award, Friedland teaches courses spanning Bronze Age to Roman art, Pompeian archaeology, and classical influences on America's founding fathers. She serves on the Capitol Archaeological Institute executive committee.
