Elisabeth Ivarsflaten is a Professor in the Department of Government at the University of Bergen, where she leads the research group Democracy and Citizenship and serves as Scientific Director of the Digital Social Science Core Facility (DIGSSCORE). She is a leading scholar in political science, with expertise in public opinion, inclusive politics, immigration, and the rise of right-wing populism in Europe.
Her research focuses on the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion in democratic societies, particularly how antiprejudice norms shape political attitudes and policy preferences. She is the co-author of The Struggle for Inclusion: Muslim Minorities and the Democratic Ethos (2022), which laid the foundation for her ERC Consolidator Grant-funded INCLUDE project. Her earlier work on far-right populism, especially the 2008 article 'What Unites Right-Wing Populists in Western Europe?', is highly influential and has been widely cited and discussed in both academic and public spheres.
Her recent publications reveal a consistent focus on intergroup relations, democratic values, and political behavior across Western Europe. Themes include the role of gender in radical right support, public tolerance of far-right parties, environmental policy preferences, and the impact of digital media on representations of Muslims. Her research combines theoretical innovation with rigorous empirical analysis using survey data and experimental methods.

Ivarsflaten has played a pivotal role in advancing social science infrastructure in Norway through the creation of the Norwegian Citizen Panel and DIGSSCORE, enabling high-quality, time-series data collection. She mentors junior researchers and collaborates widely across disciplines. Her work bridges academic research and public debate, influencing both scholarly understanding and policy discussions on inclusion and democratic resilience.
She leads the Digital Social Science Core Facility (DIGSSCORE), a major research infrastructure at the University of Bergen, and founded the Norwegian Citizen Panel, a pioneering online survey platform for social science research in Norway.
