Elinor Frey is a Course Lecturer and Course Instructor (Baroque Cello) at McGill University and Université de Montréal, and a Visiting Fellow in Music at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University (2020–2023). She specializes in Early Music performance and historical cello practices. Her research focuses on Baroque and Early Italian cello repertoire, with notable contributions to critical editions of Giuseppe Clemente Dall’Abaco’s cello works (published with Walhall Editions).
Elinor holds a Doctorate in Music from McGill University, alongside degrees from Juilliard School and Mannes College of Music. She leads the Accademia de’ Dissonanti, an organization dedicated to performance and research in historical music practices.
Her awards include the Diapason d’Or (for Dall’Abaco sonatas recordings), 2023 Juno Award (for Early Italian Cello Concertos), and Québec’s Opus Prize for Performer of the Year (2021). She has collaborated with ensembles like Tafelmusik, Pacific Baroque Orchestra, and the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, performing across Europe and the Americas.
Elinor’s work bridges historical performance, modern composition collaborations, and pedagogy. Her research has been supported by grants from SSHRC, the Canada Arts Council, and the Orpheus Institute in Ghent.
