Dr. Elina Birmingham is an Associate Professor at Simon Fraser University's Faculty of Education, specializing in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) research with a focus on neurodiversity, sound sensitivity, and technology-based interventions. Her work includes five core research programs: AI-driven interventions for sound sensitivity, neurodiversity advocacy, university mentorship for autistic students, eye-tracking studies on social attention, and facial expression analysis. Funded by NSERC and Kids Brain Health Network, her research emphasizes incorporating autistic perspectives into studies. She has received the 2019 Faculty of Education Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Supervision.
Dr. Birmingham teaches courses on developmental psychology and supervises graduate students in ASD and attention mechanisms. She actively participates in organizing conferences like the 'Creating Connections with the National Autism Research Center of Israel' and contributes to interdisciplinary collaborations. Her lab, the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Lab, drives innovation in assistive technologies and social inclusion initiatives for neurodiverse populations.
