Elijah Edelman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Rhode Island College. His work focuses on transgender and gender non-conforming communities, particularly examining how these communities navigate politics of racialization, pathologization, and recuperation.
Dr. Edelman's research takes an ethnographic and community-based approach, addressing the personal, socio-political, legal, economic, and health implications of gender transgression and sexuality among transgender and LGBT communities of color within the United States and the global south. His methodology emphasizes accessible publications with research communities through blog posts, community forums, films, and other media.
- Ph.D., The American University
- B.A., University of North Carolina-Greensboro
His research interests span Gender Studies, Transgender Studies, Queer Studies, Community-Based Research, and Radical Cartography. Edelman extends non-traditional academic work into the classroom, encouraging students to utilize mixed media in expression and research, including graphic novels, 'Zines,' and community map-making.
His publications reveal consistent focus on trans community organizing, spatial analysis of trans experiences, racial justice implications, health access challenges, and innovative methodologies for studying gender non-conformity. His book 'Trans Vitalities' offers a framework for understanding trans coalition building and social justice work, particularly in Washington, DC.
Dr. Edelman's work demonstrates strong commitment to community-engaged scholarship that bridges academic research with practical applications for trans social justice movements.
