Dr. Elham Rahme is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at McGill University's Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. She serves as a Scientist at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) at the 5252 de Maisonneuve site, where she is affiliated with both the Centre for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE) and the Metabolic Disorders and Complications Program. Her work bridges clinical epidemiology with pharmacoepidemiology research.
Dr. Rahme's research focuses on evaluating the safety, effectiveness, and economic implications of prescribed medications using large administrative databases. Her specific areas of investigation include assessing the effectiveness and safety of biologic medications (anti-TNF) for treating rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and psoriasis; examining the risk of mental health disorders and suicide in patients with autoimmune diseases; and evaluating the use and safety of new oral anticoagulants for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation and secondary prevention of venous thromboembolism. She also develops biostatistical methods for correcting outcome misclassification using multiple imputation and Bayesian approaches.
Her publication record demonstrates significant contributions across multiple medical domains including pharmacoepidemiology, cardiovascular diseases, mental health, autoimmune conditions, and biostatistical methodology. Her recent work has particularly focused on treatment resistance in dermatological conditions, epidemiology of systemic sclerosis, and methodological approaches to analyzing health administrative data.
Dr. Rahme actively collaborates with researchers across various medical specialties and has contributed to numerous studies analyzing health administrative databases, with particular expertise in using Quebec's health administrative database system for pharmacoepidemiological research.
