Dr. Eleni Kefala is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Spanish and the School of Modern Languages at the University of St Andrews. She holds a BA from the University of Cyprus and MPhil/PhD from the University of Cambridge. Her research focuses on modernity, comparative literature, and environmental humanities, with interdisciplinary approaches spanning Byzantine studies, Pre-Columbian civilizations, and transnational cultural projects. She has authored influential monographs such as The Conquered and The Open Veins of Modernity, earning the 2022 Edmund Keeley Prize and State Prize for Poetry (Cyprus, 2014). Her poetry explores transcultural and historical themes, with works like Time Stitches translated into multiple languages.
Dr. Kefala has held fellowships at the University of Pennsylvania, Harvard’s Dumbarton Oaks, and the AHRC. She teaches courses on Latin American literature, film, and cultural theory. Her work bridges literature with art, ecology, and postcolonial thought, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals on environmental justice and cultural preservation.
