Elena Verdu is a Professor of Medicine at the Faculty of Health Sciences, McMaster University. Her research focuses on the microbial commensal influence on chronic inflammatory disorders, particularly Celiac disease and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), with a long-term goal of developing microbiota-targeted therapies.
- MD, University of Buenos Aires, Argentina
- PhD, Institute of Microbiology and Gnotobiology, Czech Academy of Sciences
- Postdoctoral Fellow, McMaster University
Her research spans Gastroenterology, Microbiome, Nutrition, and the Gut-Brain Axis, investigating how commensal bacterial antigens and probiotics modulate immune responses and gut function. Recent work explores microbial metabolites, dietary interventions, and their role in visceral hypersensitivity and neuroimmune interactions.
Select scholarly activity reveals trends in:
- 2025: Microbiota-diet interactions, phage therapy, and systemic effects of celiac disease
- 2024: Food insecurity impacts on gluten-free diets, tryptophan metabolism, and PAR2 signaling
- 2023: Gluten immunogenic peptides, microbiota-humanized models, and inflammation biomarkers
Scientific recognition includes fellowship in the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS). Her work has shaped understanding of microbial proteolytic activity, gut permeability, and immune modulation in chronic intestinal conditions.
