Elena Klaw is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at San Jose State University. Her work focuses on supporting military veterans in higher education, particularly through peer leadership programs and courses addressing their transition to civilian academic life.
Her research intersects with domestic violence prevention and community engagement, stemming from her decade-long involvement in relationship violence research and her role as Director of the Center for Community Learning & Leadership. She co-PIed a grant on veterans' domestic violence risk and developed the VET Connect peer leadership program.
Analysis of her publications reveals expertise in veterans' educational needs, intimate partner violence, self-help groups, and service learning. She has consistently integrated community impact into her work, spanning topics from alcohol harm reduction to mentorship in adolescent mothers' lives.
She co-advises the San Jose State University Veteran Student Organization and chaired the SJSU Veterans Advisory Committee. Her career reflects a commitment to translating research into campus support systems, informed by her family's Holocaust survivor history and focus on resilience.
