Clinical Associate Professor Elena Cavazzoni is affiliated with the University of Sydney and the Children's Hospital Westmead, specializing in Paediatrics and Child Health. Her research focuses on pediatric organ transplantation, organ donation practices, and critical care challenges in pediatric populations. Key areas of investigation include optimizing graft function in living donor pediatric kidney transplants, mitigating risks of blood-borne virus transmission in organ transplants, and improving end-of-life care protocols for potential organ donors.
Her work integrates epidemiological analyses, clinical case studies, and collaborative studies with networks like the Pediatric Acute Lung Injury and Sepsis Investigators (PALISI) Network. Notable contributions include studies on the impact of Australia's 2009 National Reform Program on pediatric organ donation and the feasibility of uterus transplantation using deceased donors.
Professor Cavazzoni has been recognized with the 2022 Rosalind Franklin Society Award for contributions to therapeutic hypothermia and temperature management. Her research also addresses ethical dilemmas in organ donation, such as conflicts of interest in end-of-life care and the verification of suspected cancers in deceased donors.
