Dr. Elena Bachini is a Fixed-term Junior Assistant Professor at the University of Padua's Department of Mathematics. She holds a Ph.D. in Computational Mathematics from Padua (2020), complemented by international research at TU Dresden, University of Texas at Austin, and KAUST. Her work focuses on developing geometric-intrinsic numerical methods for environmental and physical systems.
Research interests span:
- Computational fluid dynamics with emphasis on surface PDEs
- Discontinuous Galerkin and finite volume methods for hyperbolic systems
- Virtual element techniques for tensor-valued equations
- Model coupling strategies for surface-subsurface hydrology
- Two-phase flows in porous media with anisotropic effects
Her publications demonstrate consistent focus on: surface-adapted discretization techniques, shallow water modeling, and multiphase flow simulations. Recent works (2023-2024) advance tensor diffusion theory and fluid-structure interaction models. Article keywords frequently include surface PDEs, Lagrangian-Eulerian schemes, and computational geosciences.
Supervision activities include:
- Primary advisor for 4 Master's candidates in Mathematical/Civil Engineering
- Co-supervision of postdoctoral researcher F. Muraro in climate resilience modeling
She participates in major EU projects including RETURN (climate risk, €multi-million), MONUGEO (geohazards), and REACT (digital twins), leveraging collaborations across 6+ countries.
