Eleanor Zelliot (1926–2016) was the Laird Bell Professor of History at Carleton College (1969–1997). A renowned scholar of Indian and South Asian history, she specialized in the Untouchable Movement led by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, medieval saint-poets, and the Ambedkar-inspired Buddhist movement. She co-founded Carleton’s South Asian Studies program and authored over 80 articles and four pivotal books, including Untouchable Saints and Ambedkar’s World. Her 2013 publication, Ambedkar’s World: The Making of Babasaheb and the Dalit Movement, remains influential. Zelliot was also a dedicated educator who led student programs in India via the ACM consortium, serving as program director four times until 1996. Post-retirement, she continued advising students on South Asian studies and fostering global academic connections.
