Elaine Weiner is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at McGill University, affiliated with the Stephen Leacock Building. She holds a PhD from the University of Michigan (2003) and has been at McGill since 2003. Her research focuses on gender politics in Central and East European societies, EU policy implementation, and qualitative methods. Current work examines child care provisions in the Czech Republic and Canada through a gender equality lens.
Education: PhD in Sociology from the University of Michigan (2003).
Research interests include gender mainstreaming in the EU, EU membership obligations (e.g., equal opportunity legislation), and post-socialist societal transitions. Her book Market Dreams (2007) explores Czech women’s experiences during the transition to capitalism.
Her publications analyze gender policy dynamics in the EU, including challenges to gender visibility in EU policies and the interplay of morality and market forces. Courses taught span gender and work, post-socialist societies, and qualitative methods.
