Elaine Sutherland is a Professor II at the Centre for Research on Discretion and Paternalism at the University of Stirling, UK, and holds emerita positions at the University of Stirling and Lewis & Clark Law School (Portland, Oregon). She specializes in Child and Family Law, with a focus on comparative and international legal frameworks. Her work includes over 150 articles, 7 books, and 9 edited volumes, including the third edition of her treatise Child and Family Law: Intimate Adult Relationships (2022).

Her research explores child protection systems, children's rights to participation, and legitimacy challenges in legal decisions. She founded the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child Implementing Project (CRC-IP) in 2012 to study CRC implementation globally. Current projects include the Legitimacy Challenges initiative and contributions to the International Survey of Family Law.
Elaine has taught at the Universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling, and Lewis & Clark Law School. She now works from her home study, supported by her cat Ariadne. Her recent focus includes discrete research projects and occasional guest lectures.
