Elain Fu: Professor and Bioengineering Leader
Elain Fu is a Professor in the Department of Chemical, Biological, and Environmental Engineering at Oregon State University's College of Engineering, and serves as Director of the Bioengineering Graduate Program. Her research focuses on developing microfluidic tools for precision health applications, including high-performance paper-based diagnostics for infectious disease and therapy monitoring. She leads the Fu Lab, which emphasizes understanding physicochemical processes underlying novel devices.
Awards & Honors
- Warwick Family Faculty Scholar (2022–2025)
- College of Engineering Carter Award (2022)
- OSU Biohealth Fellows Program Member (2022)
Grants & Collaborations
- NIH R01 grants for HIV test development and saliva-based therapeutic monitoring
- Valley Foundation funding for biomarker monitoring in noninvasive fluids
- Collaborations with HP on lateral flow assays and Dr. Johnston on smart wound monitors
Research Focus
Her lab pioneers low-cost, field-deployable diagnostic tools such as paper microfluidics for malaria, influenza, and phenylketonuria (PKU). Recent advances include electrochemical sensors for drug monitoring in saliva and 3D-printed fabric-based devices. She emphasizes scalability, accessibility, and integration with global health needs.
Education & Mentorship
Dr. Fu mentors a diverse team of graduate and undergraduate students, many of whom present at conferences like BMES and win awards for innovation. Notable advisees include Lael (PhD in Bioengineering) and Corey (PhD in Chemical Engineering).
