Professor Eileen S Cowey serves as Head of the Nursing & Health Care School within the School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing at the University of Glasgow. With a career spanning over three decades since qualifying as a nurse in 1991, she has established herself as a leading expert in stroke care and end-of-life nursing practices. Her leadership position oversees strategic direction, curriculum development, and international collaborations for a school consistently ranked highly for student satisfaction in UK league tables.
Professor Cowey's research program focuses primarily on stroke care, with particular expertise in end-of-life care, pain management, and palliative approaches following stroke. Her work frequently employs mixed methods methodologies and systematic review approaches to develop evidence-based best practice guidelines. The trajectory of her recent publications demonstrates continued expansion into workforce development issues, including her 2024 research on migration intentions among nursing staff in Sub-Saharan Africa, alongside ongoing investigations into stroke rehabilitation, patient safety, and spiritual care needs.
Her research has been supported by significant grants from the Chief Scientist Office and Scottish Government, including projects on core outcome measures for palliative care after stroke and development of best practice statements for vision problems following acute stroke. Professor Cowey maintains active involvement in UK committees shaping nursing regulation and higher education policy, leveraging her dual registration as a nurse in both the UK and Singapore to inform transnational nursing education initiatives.
