Eileen McDonald is a Practice Professor in the Department of Health, Behavior and Society at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She holds joint affiliations with the Department of Health Policy and Management and the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy. She directs the Children’s Safety Center and oversees the MSPH and joint Bachelor’s-MSPH programs in health education and health communication.

Her research spans injury prevention, health education, and health communication, with a focus on pediatric and family safety. She explores the use of mHealth tools, computer-tailored messaging, and experiential teaching to improve safety behaviors. Projects include the web and mobile app Safety in Seconds 2.0, housing quality assessments, and opioid safe storage interventions.
Her recent publications reflect a strong trend in intervention trials using technology to enhance safety counseling in pediatric and emergency settings. Themes include child passenger safety, opioid misuse prevention, home injury risks, and health equity. The use of randomized controlled trials and community-based participatory research is prevalent across her work.

McDonald leads major academic programs and directs the Children’s Safety Center, a nationally recognized public health initiative. Her current projects include community partnerships for child safety, fire prevention education, and interventions to reduce pediatric injuries through home renovations and digital tools.
