Professor Eileen Kaner is a leading applied behavioural scientist at Newcastle University, holding the Professor of Public Health and Primary Care Research title within the Faculty of Medical Sciences. She serves as Director of the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) North East and North Cumbria, overseeing collaborations across six regional universities and 60 healthcare organizations. Her work focuses on illness prevention in vulnerable groups through screening and brief interventions, with a particular emphasis on health inequalities and mental health-substance use comorbidity.
Research Interests include alcohol and public health, health behavior change, pragmatic trials of complex interventions, and addressing disparities in healthcare access. Recent work explores interventions for severely disadvantaged populations, including mixed-method studies on oral health, substance use, and weight management in secure mental health settings.
From 2024 publications, her research spans systematic reviews on mental health prevention, qualitative analyses of alcohol-screening acceptability, and realist syntheses of family preservation mechanisms. She supervises postgraduate research in alcohol-substance use, public health interventions, and complex intervention evaluation, while teaching MSc Public Health modules on health policy and intervention design.
