Eike Bauer is a Professor of Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Missouri - St. Louis, where he has served since 2006. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2012 and Full Professor in 2022. Dr. Bauer also serves as Director of Graduate Studies. He received his Diploma (M.Sc. equivalent) and Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany.
His research focuses on organometallic chemistry and catalysis, with specialization in:
- Development of iron and ruthenium catalysts for sustainable synthesis
- Ferrocene/ferrocenium catalytic systems
- Transition-metal-catalyzed glycosylation reactions
- Propargylic alcohol activation
- Green chemistry approaches
- Spectroscopic characterization of catalytic mechanisms (UV-Vis, FTIR, NMR)
His publications (2015-2024) demonstrate a consistent focus on developing novel catalytic systems, with recent emphasis on ferrocenium catalysis for organic transformations and iron-based sustainable methodologies. The work combines mechanistic investigations with practical synthetic applications.
Scientific awards include:
- Pfizer St. Louis Green Chemistry Award (2009)
- UMSL Research Award (2019)
He has advised numerous graduate students (14 PhD/MS students) and secured research funding from NSF and ACS. His research group maintains active collaborations and regularly presents at regional ACS meetings and specialized catalysis conferences.
The Bauer Group laboratory focuses on synthetic organometallic chemistry and catalysis, equipped with modern instrumentation for synthesis and characterization. The group actively involves undergraduate researchers through programs like STARS and CLIMB to promote minority participation in STEM.
