Eike B. Bauer is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Missouri - St. Louis, where he serves as Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry within the College of Arts and Sciences. He joined UMSL as an Assistant Professor in Fall 2006, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2012, and to Full Professor in 2022.
Dr. Bauer received his Diploma (M.Sc. thesis degree) and his Ph.D from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany. Prior to joining UMSL, he held a postdoctoral position at the University of California, Riverside and a position as Visiting Assistant Professor at Illinois Wesleyan University.
His research focuses on Organic and Organometallic Chemistry, particularly in the area of catalysis. Dr. Bauer's work centers on designing and synthesizing novel ligands such as phosphoramidites and phosphinooxazolines, and investigating their metal complexes for catalytic applications. His research group has made significant contributions to ferrocenium catalysis, iron-based oxidation reactions, and ruthenium-catalyzed transformations including propargylic substitutions and Mukaiyama aldol reactions. The group's work spans from fundamental organometallic chemistry to practical applications in organic synthesis.
Dr. Bauer's recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on ferrocenium catalysis, iron catalysis, and ruthenium complexes for organic transformations. His research shows a consistent theme of developing sustainable catalytic methods using both precious and earth-abundant metals, with particular emphasis on mechanistic understanding and ligand design principles.
Among his notable achievements, Dr. Bauer's research group received the 2009 Pfizer St. Louis Green Chemistry Award. His students have regularly won awards including the American Chemical Society's Undergraduate Organic Chemistry Award and the Jack L. Coombs Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award.
Dr. Bauer actively mentors a diverse group of students including PhD candidates, undergraduate researchers, and high school students through programs like STARS and CLIMB. His research group has consistently presented at regional meetings including the Missouri Organic Chemistry Day and the American Chemical Society Midwest Regional Meeting.
The Bauer group maintains well-equipped laboratories within the Chemistry Department at UMSL, which is described as having "modern instrumentation and computing resources" and an "international make-up" of faculty and students.
