Edwin VanWijngaarden, Ph.D., is a Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD). He holds joint professorships in Environmental Medicine, Dentistry, Pediatrics, and the Center for Community Health and Prevention. His research focuses on environmental and occupational health, particularly the neurocognitive impacts of prenatal methylmercury exposure through the long-term Seychelles Child Development Study. He leads interdisciplinary teams and collaborates on clinical and translational research through the Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI).
Dr. VanWijngaarden earned his PhD in Epidemiology from UNC Chapel Hill (2002) and MSc in Environmental Sciences from Wageningen University (1998). He is a Fellow of the American College of Epidemiology and has published over 140 peer-reviewed articles. His educational roles include directing epidemiology and environmental health programs, including the innovative HEAL dual-degree program.
His research emphasizes environmental exposures' effects on neurodevelopment, with recent work exploring selenium's role in mitigating mercury toxicity and the benefits of fish consumption despite mercury risks. Collaborative projects include studying asthma, dental caries, and cancer survivorship.
Key awards include the University of Rochester Graduate Alumni Award (2018) and Delta Omega (2002). He mentors over 100 students and junior faculty, chairs editorial roles (e.g., International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health), and advises federal study sections.
