Edward Webb is a Professor of Global Forests and Land Use and Director of the Viikki Tropical Resources Institute (VITRI) at the University of Helsinki. He holds academic appointments in the Department of Forest Sciences and the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS). His work focuses on tropical forest conservation, land-use policy, and sustainable development.
Research interests include: forest expansion dynamics in mountain regions, mangrove conservation, cyclone impacts on tropical ecosystems, and biodiversity policy. He leads projects like 'Balancing secondary forests and agroforests in Nepal' (2023–2027) and 'Higher Education Cooperation for Forest Landscape Restoration in Bangladesh/Vietnam' (2022–2026). Funding sources include the Academy of Finland and EU Erasmus+ programs.
Recent publications examine tropical tree conservation strategies, cyclone damage mechanisms, and spatial patterns of species distribution. Webb supervises doctoral programs in Interdisciplinary Environmental Sciences and Sustainable Use of Renewable Natural Resources.
