Dr. Edward Rawana serves as Professor in the Department of Psychology at Lakehead University and Professor at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. He has directed the Centre of Education and Research on Positive Youth Development (CERPYD) since 2010, following previous appointments as Associate Professor and Adjunct Professor at Lakehead University. His four-decade career focuses on strengths-based psychological approaches across multiple professional domains.
Academic credentials include an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo, along with certification as a Clinical Psychologist in Ontario. His research centers on psychological strengths assessment and application, particularly through the internationally recognized Strengths Assessment Inventory (SAI) for children and adolescents.
Dr. Rawana's work targets educational systems, mental health interventions, and addiction treatment with special emphasis on Aboriginal populations and youth in conflict with the law. His methodologies provide frameworks for utilizing strengths to address behavioral challenges in school settings and clinical practice.
With over 30 publications including two foundational books—"Reshaping School Culture" and "Strengths and the Ontario Language Curriculum"—his interdisciplinary collaborations span Clinical Psychology, Social Work, Education, Nursing, and Medicine. He actively partners with Northwestern Ontario school boards to implement strengths-based approaches that improve emotional, social, behavioral, and academic outcomes.
As a dedicated mentor, Dr. Rawana has supervised numerous graduate psychology students at Lakehead University, enhancing their clinical and research capabilities through co-authored publications and practical training. The CERPYD serves as his operational hub for developing resources, providing professional consultation, and advancing strengths-based research in youth development.
