Dr. Edward Randviir is a Senior Lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University specializing in Green, Inorganic, and Electrochemistry. His research focuses on addressing waste and recycling challenges through electrochemical and thermochemical methods, particularly in textiles and urban waste. He leads the Circular Chemistry Group, collaborating with industries to develop sustainable solutions like recycling road sweeping waste and 3D-printed furniture from recycled aggregates via the CIRMAP project (funded by Interreg). His work on electrochemical sensors, including PFAS detection and impedance spectroscopy, has been widely cited. He is passionate about education, teaching analytical and green chemistry while fostering student involvement in research through apprenticeships and projects.
Research Interests:
- Textile recycling using chemoenzymatic methods and novel solvents
- Electrochemical depolymerization of textiles
- Recycling fine aggregates from demolition waste for 3D-printed urban furniture
- Development of portable electrochemical sensors for environmental pollutants like PFAS
Scientific Contributions: His work on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has advanced sensor technology, with a highly cited review in Analytical Methods. Collaborations include UBU Environmental (road sweeping waste valorization) and Royal Society-funded textile recycling projects. He co-founded the #RSCPoster Twitter conference, recognized as a runner-up in digital media innovation awards.
Teaching & Mentorship: Teaches inorganic and green chemistry, supervising 1 PhD student and mentoring 2 KTP associates. Advocates for experiential learning, integrating industry partnerships into curricula. Offers research opportunities in polyester/cotton recycling and electrochemical depolymerization for prospective MRes/PhD students.
Lab & Projects: Circular Chemistry Group focuses on real-world applications like textile waste-to-value and sustainable urban materials. Current projects include CIRMAP (3D-printed recycled furniture) and PFAS sensor development for environmental monitoring.
