Hang Liu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Apparel, Merchandising, Design and Textiles at Washington State University (WSU), affiliated with the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. in Textile Sciences from the University of Georgia, an M.S. in Textile Engineering from Donghua University, and a B.S. in Textile Engineering from China Textile University. Her research focuses on sustainable textile innovation, including nanofiber production for smart wearables, 3D-printed functional textiles, and textile waste recycling. She has received prestigious awards such as the NSF CAREER Award and the ITAA Rising Star Award, and was named a student-voted favorite professor at WSU.
Research Interests include:
- Nanofiber applications in smart textiles and sensors
- Biobased materials and circular economy solutions
- Polymers processing-structure-property relationships
Recent work highlights sustainable material development, such as nanocellulose composites from cotton waste and regenerated cellulose fibers from denim. Her 2023 studies explored consumer perceptions of eco-friendly apparel and conductive textiles for wearable electronics. Over 30 peer-reviewed publications demonstrate her cross-disciplinary approach spanning materials chemistry, engineering, and consumer behavior analysis.
Awards include:
- National Science Foundation CAREER Award
- ITAA Rising Star Award
- WSU CAHNRS Teaching Excellence Award (Student Choice)
Her lab collaborates on projects involving textiles for health monitoring, eco-packaging solutions, and upcycled materials. Current research priorities include advancing recyclable polymer systems and improving circularity in textile manufacturing.
